Store return policies have become much stricter in the past few years. Fortunately for you shoppers, many of the larger retailers have relaxed their return policies just for the holidays, but you need to read the fine print.
December 25th is a day to give and to get, but if you unwrap a gift you'd rather not keep, many stores are making return policy exceptions just for the holidays.
For items other than electronics, Shopko typically allows 90-days to make a return, but only with a receipt.
Manager Dale Adams says that strict policy won't be applied to the holiday season. "Well we loosened it up because a lot of the times people don't have the receipt because it was a gift."
Stores like Target, Best Buy and Shopko can look up a receipt based upon a phone number or credit card number, but during the holidays that may not be necessary.
"We've relaxed some of our annual policies to give in store credit or a gift card in lieu of cash returned," says Adams if the customer doesn't have a receipt.
The electronics department generally has the strictest return policy in almost any store but for the holiday season Shopko among others have extended their standard 30 day electronics return policy.
"In this case, because it is the holidays and people started shopping early anything purchased from November 4th until today you have until January 24th to return," says Best Buy's Dawn Bernetzke.
Best Buy, Sears and Target have extended their return policies to the 24th. At Marshall's you only have until the 8th. Walmart will accept Christmas returns until either the 9th or the 24th depending on which department it's from. Shopko will give you until the end of January.
It's important to note that all of these holiday return exceptions, have exceptions. So double check every stores individual policy and read the fine print
