MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) - A Manitowoc County man convicted in the 2005 killing of a young photographer may find out this week whether he will get a new trial.
Steven Avery was convicted in 2007 of first-degree intentional homicide and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The Mishicot man was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.
He was accused of killing 25-year-old Teresa Halbach. Avery previously spent 18 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit before DNA tests exonerated him.
His lawyers filed a motion saying he deserves a new trial because his previous trial was marred by a number of procedural errors. Judge Patrick Willis has until Tuesday to make his decision.
