MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Smoking ban advocate Marilyn Townsend said the excitement is building as legislative committees hold hearings on a proposal that would prohibit smoking in most workplaces in Wisconsin.
The village of Shorewood Hills trustee lost her parents to smoking-related illnesses. She said the ban would help people trying to quit their tobacco habit.
Dozens of people showed up a Senate committee hearing Tuesday. An Assembly panel scheduled a hearing Wednesday. The proposal could go to the full Senate and Assembly next week.
Wisconsin Tavern League lobbyist Scott Stenger said his group hopes for changes such as reduced fines for violations.
Jeff Steinbock owns Uhle (YEW'-lee) Tobacco Co. in Milwaukee. He said there should be an exemption for tobacco shops and cigar bars - because no one expects a smokefree environment there.
