KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WBAY) The state softball tournament begins Thursday in Madison, and the best matchup on paper takes place right away. No. 1 Oshkosh North will face No. 2 Kaukauna in the Division I quarterfinals, featuring two of the best pitchers in the state, Oshkosh North's Sydney Supple and Kaukauna's Haley Hestekin.
Hestekin and Supple have been near perfect in 2017 and that's not the only thing they have in common.
Both girls are big ten commits with lots of respect for one another.
“It's always a battle she's a very good pitcher. I know I'll face her in the Big Ten in coming years. I know we both really want to win this so we'll see what happens,” said Haley Hestekin.
“Hestekin is great pitcher. I have a lot of respect for her, and I'm going to see her a lot more years down the road, but she's a great athlete she always brings her best,” said Sydney Supple.
Even Kaukauna's best hasn't been able to stop the Spartans this year. Oshkosh North enters the state tournament on an 18 game-win streak. Two of those are shutouts of the Galloping Ghosts in the regular season.
“We know very much what we are going to face, who we're going to face. We're preparing. I’m sure they're doing the same. It's going to be a great game,” said Oshkosh North Head Coach, Cindy Suess.
Kaukauna’s two losses to Oshkosh North are their only two of the season, but the only thing they’re changing headed into their third meeting with the Spartans is their mindset.
“I think we were a little too tense putting a little too much pressure on ourselves. I mean, you got to relax you got to have fun,” said Hestekin.
“You’ve got two of the best pitchers in the state of Wisconsin, and you know, in my perspective, it's going to be a great game. It's going to come down to who gets better swings at quality pitches and we'll see what happens,” said Kaukauna head Coach Tim Roehrig.
Anything goes at state, but if you've seen these teams, there's really only one thing you can expect.
“It’s going to be a dogfight. It's going to be a fight to the end,” said Hestekin.
