Notre Dame volleyball has high expectations with #1 ranking

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - After 2 straight trips to state -- the first two in program history -- the Notre Dame Academy volleyball team is experiencing another first, debuting at #1 in the state D2 rankings this year.

“It feels really good actually,” Notre Dame senior Sydney Slack said. “We've never really been #1 in program history really, we've been #2, #3, or #4.”

“This is going to be really fun this year,” senior Morgan Van Drisse said. “It means a lot because we see that our hard work is paying off.”

“With the ranking, and how we did last year, and how we've been playing this year, I think we will have a good shot at winning state,” sophomore Katherine Walsh said.

That's the goal, after making it to the Resch and coming close the last 2 years.

“My sophomore year we got to state, but lost in the first round,” Slack said. “Then last year we made it to state, made it to the finals, but lost. This year we definitely want to go all the way and get that Gold Ball.”

“The competition to get there again is going to be really hard, but I think we have the squad to do it,” Van Drisse said.

After experiencing so much success, the Tritons are now learning what it feels like to be hunted. The team that beat Notre Dame in the last two State Tournaments, Catholic Memorial, graduated much of its core and is no longer even ranked.

“They graduated a good amount of D1 committed players last year,” Walsh said.

“The pressure kind of makes it fun. If we do make it back, then it's all worth it,” Van Drisse said.

“We have a big target on our back and we're going to have to work really hard to stay #1,” Slack said.
