GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - State girls high school basketball and volleyball tournaments will be held at the Resch Center through at least 2025.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and PMI Entertainment Group on Wednesday announced a five year contract extension for the tournaments.
The previous contract went through 2020.
The WIAA moved the girls basketball tournament from Madison to the Resch Center in 2013.
"Our experience since 2002 and again through 2013 has been captured in the little details, the little things that have allowed us to recognize what great people, what a great fit this venue and everyone in here has been for our tournament," says Dave Anderson, WIAA Executive Director.
The basketball tournament brings about 40,000 people to the area each year, according to PMI Entertainment.
"That translates to a $2.5 million economic impact for the Green Bay area," reads a statement from PMI.
Green Bay economic leaders credit local businesses for their hospitality.
"Put up signs on marquees and our hotels are decorating their lobbies in the school colors," says Brad Toll, Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Green Bay has really stepped up and made this a great event for the girls and really that's what it's about."
The volleyball tournament has been played at the Resch Center since 2002. It draws nearly 20,000 fans each year for an economic impact of $700,000.
The boys state volleyball tournament will move to the Resch Center in 2019.
"When you look at what it will mean in 2019, with girls volleyball, boys volleyball and girls basketball, about 70,000 people a year will be coming to the Resch Center for WIAA events," says Ken Wachter, PMI Entertainment Group President.
