Utility scam expanding, targeting businesses

Originally published December 1, 2015 Some businesses in Dodge County have been the target of phone scammers posing as a utility company, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff says scammers initially targeted WE Energies customers, but they’re also targeting Waupun Utilities and Juneau Utilities customers.

Here’s how it works: The scammers claim a customer is behind on utility bills and threaten to shut off power if there is no immediate payment. The scammers demand payment in form of one of those pre-paid debit cards.

Officials say the thieves have demanded amounts as high as $800.

The scammers are confrontational and will argue and threaten their intended victim.

The Sheriff’s Office recommends hanging up on these scammers and calling your utility company to confirm any billing or payment issues.
