GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -- With years of planning and fundraising, UW-Green Bay will be opening its new outdoor athletic facility next spring.
The $4.9 million Kress Family Outdoor Recreation Complex is well on its way to completion thanks to student fees and private donors, but there’s still some work to be done.
Planning for the new men’s and women’s soccer field stadium started back in 2009. Construction crews broke ground earlier this year, hoping to work well into the winter to get it done for spring.
The stadium will have a brand new grandstand, all-weather turf, upgraded technology and a new lighting system.
The new field will also be NCAA compliant, which means it can host championship games, but UWGB’s athletic director said the new soccer facility isn’t just for the student athletes.
"The facility will be available for youth, summer camps and programs the institution provides for kids looking to be in the soccer space so that will be exciting,” Charles Guthrie said. “But it will also be available for campus students. I don't know if that was emphasized, but the students will play on the field for intramurals which is going to be pretty fun.”
Some of the money is also being used to add a press box near the softball field.
Contractors are hoping to install the new turf this coming week.
