Telethon for hurricane relief raises more than $44 million

NEW YORK (WBAY) - Dozens of A-list celebrities came out on Monday to take part in "Hand in Hand" hurricane relief benefit.

The telethon raised more than $44 million for the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Irma.

Apple donated $5 million and Albertsons Cos. and Merck each gave $1 million.

Chris Paul, an NBA star, said during the telethon that the NBA Players Association, which donated $500,000, would match any professional basketball player's donation up to $20,000.

The telethon was broadcast on all four major television networks. The celebrities came together in Nashville, Los Angeles, San Antonio and New York City.

Usher and Blake Shelton sang "Stand By Me." George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton, Robert Early Keen and Lyle Lovett sang 'Texas" and "I Believe" from San Antonio. Luis Fonsi and Tori Kelly sang "Hallelujah," Brad Paisley, Demi Lovato, Darius Rucker, Cece Winans performed "With a Little Help from My Friends," and Dave Matthews sang "Mercy."
