Police identify Plymouth fire victim as missing mother

PLYMOUTH, Wis. (WBAY) - Police have identified a woman found dead following an apartment fire in downtown Plymouth as Tammy L. Aschenbach.

Aschenbach, 46, was reported missing after the fire broke out early Thursday morning at 408 E. Mill Street.

"Our sincerest condolences go out to her family and friends.
The fire scene investigation will continue into next week and the area is secured and off limits to the public," reads a statement from Plymouth Police.

The fire broke out at approximately 1 a.m. at a two-story, six-unit apartment building. Police officers tried to get inside the building but had to retreat due to heavy smoke.

Police said Acshenbach initially escaped the fire, but she did not know whether or not her children had escaped. She went back into the burning building.

Police said the children had escaped and they are safe.

It took more than 100 firefighters from 22 departments to put out the fire. Crews had to pump water from the river.

Every department in Sheboygan County responded to the scene, as well as crews from Fond du Lac County.

The investigation continues into what caused the fire.

Meanwhile, the building at 414 E. Mill Street has been released to the owners. People displaced from the addresses at 404 and 410 E. Mill Street are still receiving help from the American Red Cross.

E. Mill Street re-opened to traffic Friday, but will close again on Monday and Tuesday for investigation.
