OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) - Oshkosh's largest employer breaks ground on its new global headquarters.
Action 2 News first told you in September that Oshkosh Corporation was eyeing the city-owned Lakeside Golf Course location for the project.
Now the specialty truck and defense contractor is a step closer to moving in.
Oshkosh Corporation says it's been growing at a pace that's outgrowing its space.
"It's a good problem. We've been growing and adding buildings all over Oshkosh," Oshkosh Corporation CEO and President Wilson Jones said. "Close to 40 buildings, now we've been using -- not really an efficient way to work."
Oshkosh Corporation says the new building will allow them to hold up to 650 team members under one roof.
"To retain our good talent and then attract more talent," Wilson said. "This is something we felt like would be the final move for us to make as a company to where we can compete globally in Oshkosh."
Oshkosh Corporation says dirt will be moved this week with a set completion date of fall of next year.
That's when a 190,000 square feet headquarters will rest on the formerly Oshkosh owned Lakeshore Golf Course.
It's a location that did come with some community pushback.
"That was a big community controversy and we had to get through that to get people to understand the value of retaining Oshkosh Corporation," said Mark Rohloff, Oshkosh City Manager.
And with the help of the Greater Oshkosh Economic Corporation and the Oshkosh Chamber getting this message out...
"It will be an economic driver," Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce's Rob Kleman said. "I mean, they are an economic engine. Like I said, we're very fortunate to have them here."
...garnering community support was made possible.
"This is where we belong. This is where we started 100 plus years," said Wilson.
