MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) -- Some kids in Manitowoc got the chance to do their Christmas shopping with a helping hand from police.

The Manitowoc Police Department has been hosting the 'Shop with a Cop' event for several years.

With the help of donations, 15 kids were able to go shopping at Walmart paired up with 30 officers who volunteered.

After the kids picked out their gifts, they went back to the police department for a pizza party, snacks and gift wrapping along with a visit from Santa.

Officers say the event allows kids to have a positive interaction with police that they'll remember for years to come.

"Unfortunately, the small percentage of the negative with police out there outweighs the large percentage of the positive. But this is so that the kids out there don't associate police officers with the negative aspect," said Lt. Jeremy Kronforst, of the Manitowoc Police Department.

Volunteers from the Manitowoc and Cleaveland Police Departments along with the sheriff's office, jail and joint dispatch all helped with the event.
