COHOES, NY (CNN) - A man in Cohoes, New York, wanted to make a sword after seeing how it was done on TV.

The resulting fire damaged 32 buildings and caused the city to declare a state of emergency. No one was hurt. Eighteen people lost their homes, at least temporarily.

The fire chief say John Gomes, 51, was trying to bend metal in a barrel like he'd seen on a competitive reality show, "Forged in Fire."

But it was a very windy day, and the fire escaped the barrel and spread for several blocks.

Gomes is charged with fourth-degree arson and first-degree reckless endangerment.

The mayor called it the worst fire in the city's history and is "heartbreaking."
