Latest utility scam targets businesses

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WBAY) - Sheboygan Police are spreading the word, saying the years-old utility scam is currently targeting businesses across the city.

Callers claiming to be with We Energies are calling businesses, saying they missed their last payment and threatening to shut off their power. They demand payment with pre-paid MoneyPak cards within 30 minutes.

The legitimate utility does not demand payment through any type of gift card or credit card purchase. It's unlikely to threaten to shut off service for a single missed payment and definitely won't call you with a 30 minute deadline. It will send a letter or notice to make payment arrangements.

Police say if you believe you may owe a utility money, contact that utility directly.
