Originally published May 31, 2016 Wisconsin Public Service is warning businesses that they're being targeted in the latest scams.
WPS says its call center received numerous calls about a scam which seems to be targeting restaurants in the western part of the utility's coverage area and day cares in the Green Bay area.
The scam, however, is the same: The caller claims to be with WPS, and threatens the power will be shut off if payment isn't made immediately. The caller may request a pre-paid debit card, such as a Green Dot card.
WPS will never give customers a 45-minute ultimatum to pay a bill, and will never ask its customers to go to a drug store or retailer to buy a pre-paid card for payment.
You can report these scam calls to WPS by calling toll-free 1-800-450-7260. Get as much information as you can, such as the phone number if you have Caller ID, the date and time of the call, and details of what the caller told you.
