MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – The Kaukauna and Laconia softball teams both claimed WIAA state titles Saturday.
The Ghosts claimed the Division 1 crown with a 3-1 win over Wilmot.
Kaukauna surrendered a run in the top of the 1st inning, before pitcher Haley Hestekin shut down the opposition the rest of the way, delivering the win with 11 strikeouts.
The Ghosts win it all for the 2nd time in program history. Their previous win came in 2010.
Kaukauna had narrowly missed out on trips to the State Tournament in each of the last 3 seasons, falling in the Sectional Final each time.
In Division 3, Laconia is #1 again, after finishing off another stellar season by topping Weyauwega-Fremont 5-0 in the championship game.
Laconia has now won 61 consecutive games and 3 straight state titles.
Pitcher Kayla Schwebke led the way with 10 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.
Schwebke finished her year allowing only 3 earned runs total.
