GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (WBAY) - The Kimberly Papermakers baseball team has been to State for baseball a lot in recent memory. The last three trips have ended with two runner-up trophies. On Thursday that changed. Kimberly defeated Sun Prairie 4-2 in the Division 1 State Championship at Fox Cities Stadium.
Behind six innings from sophomore pitcher Cade Hunstiger and a save from senior Ryan Carney, the Papermakers were able to hold off Sun Prairie's comeback in the 7th inning.
Hunstiger, who had only made one previous start this season up until Thursday went six innings, giving up only two runs.
Sun Prairie took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out ground out by Cardinals Ben Hauser. Kimberly responded in the third with a run of its own when sophomore Drew Lechnir brought in his brother, Zach to tie the game at 1-1.
Then in the sixth inning Kimberly scored three runs. Drew Lechnir's single brought in two runs and then Zach Carney singled bringing in another run.
Sun Prairie made noise in the bottom of the seventh with two outs when Carson Holin's RBI single made the score 4-2. Kimberly senior Zach Carney got a pop out to end the game.
