According to the Fond du Lac Fire Department, unattended cooking fires are the number one cause of house fires. Fire fighters say you should never leave the room while food is cooking.

They say it's also important to keep children away from the oven and stove when you're using it and the lid to a pan nearby in a case a fire flares up, you can cover it to put it out.

One on of the main messages the Fond du Lac Fire Department is sending to families during the fire prevention week is to come up with an escape plan in case of a fire.

"Seventy five percent of people have an emergency escape plan, but no one every practices it. So it's important to practice in the morning, during the day and at night so you have that feeling because small children five, six years old, just to get them out of the house without any emergency is difficult," said Troy Haase, Chief of Fire Prevention for Fond du Lac Fire Department.

They say it's also a good idea to have a fire extinguisher. Keep it in a convenient spot and know how to use it property.
