I-43 will go down to one lane in Brown & Manitowoc counties

Green Bay, Manitowoc, Wis. (WBAY) – Spring has sprung, and so has road construction season in Wisconsin.

Starting Monday, I-43 in Brown and Manitowoc counties will go down to one lane.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says closures will result in only one lane of travel open to drivers on northbound and southbound I-43 in the project work areas.

Travel delays are expected.

"There's going to be only one lane open in both directions. That's the important thing because usually when we close a lane down on the interstates, it does slow down traffic. People get there and you slow down because you have to go 55, so it does back you up, cause delays," said Mark Kantola, Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The closures are part of an I-43 resurfacing and bridge structure project taking place March 20, 2017 to November 2017.

"It's not like some of the resurfacing you see on smaller roads where we'll do it under traffic and have a flagger there," Kantola says. "We can't do that when we do bridge deck overlays. So these lanes are going to be closed in Brown and Manitowoc County."

Some local roads and I-43 ramps will also close for construction.

Here's a look at the upcoming impacts in Brown County:

The Brown County I-43 resurfacing and bridge overlay project will take place on 10.6 miles of I-43 from WIS 96 to WIS 172.

• March 20, 2017 to June 2017: I-43 will be reduced to one lane in each direction between WIS 96 in Denmark and the WIS 172/I-43 interchange ramp.

• Motorists should be prepared for travel delays, especially during peak travel times.

• March 20, 2017 to late May 2017: County MM overpass at I-43 CLOSED and detoured for bridge deck replacement.

• County MM/I-43 ramps will remain open during deck replacement, but motorist will not be able to cross the bridge deck.

• Motorists seeking access to US 141/29 from southbound I-43 will be directed to use County Road JJ/I-43 exit.

• March 20, 2017 to March 24, 2017 (nighttime only): All lanes of I-43 under the County MM bridge CLOSED nightly, 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., for removal of the bridge deck at County MM.

• Motorists should be prepared for travel delays, especially during peak travel times.

• March 24 to July 2017: Southbound I-43 on-ramp from County C CLOSED.
