OMRO, Wis. (WBAY) - A major road construction project gets underway in Omro on March 12. Prepare for a big detour now.
Wisconsin State Highway 116 between Spruce Street and the northern city limits will be closed and detoured through October. The construction includes improvements to the roadway and utilities running under the highway, and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.
North of Omro, the Highway 116 Wolf River bridge in Winneconne is being replaced, and Main Street on both sides of the bridge is also being reconstructed in March and April.
As a result, a wide detour will send drivers around the east end of Lake Butte des Morts -- from State Highway 21 to Interstate 41 to US Highway 45 to get back on 116.
Also, popular routes to Omro High School are cut off through at least May. To get to the high school, take Spruce Street to Poygan Road, follow it to N. Webster Ave, then get on Fox Trail Click here for the detour map from the DOT. The intersection of 116 and North Webster will be a pedestrian crossing only.
