Green Bay Police warn residents of lawn thefts on East Side

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -- A string of yard thefts over the past few weeks on the East side of Green Bay has the local police department on high alert.

Since July 21, the Green Bay Police Department has received 19 reports of lawn ornaments taken from yards in the Wandering Springs, Wilder, Red Smith and McAuliffe Park area.

Wandering Springs subdivision resident Carol Martell says her lawn has been hit by thieves three times over the past couple of weeks, stealing about 120 solar lights, an angel statue, a Greek goddess statue and some personal figurines.

“It’s something that was dear to me because they were given because of my grandchildren,” said Martell. “I have had them a long time.”

Captain Kevin Warych said they don’t have very many details about the thief/thieves involved or why the items are being taken, but they are pooling their resources and upping patrols in those areas.

Martell said about $1,300 worth of lawn ornaments have been stolen out of her yard and she is asking residents and neighbors in the area to be vigilant so they can put an end to the thefts.

“Well it makes me feel like I need to keep things secure and makes me more suspicious if I see anything going on,” said Carol Sevcik, Martell’s neighbor.

“I don’t want it stolen from anyone else’s yard,” said Martell. “It has to stop.”
