Green Bay Commander of USS Fitzgerald relieved of duties

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan (WBAY) -- The USS Fitzgerald Commanding Officer Bryce Benson, who is from Green Bay, has been temporarily relieved of his command for medical reasons.

Stars and Stripes reports the Navy said Cmdr. Benson is relieved while recovering from injuries sustained in the collision between the USS Fitzgerald destroyer and the ACX Crystal cargo ship on June 17.

Cmdr. Benson was one of the three sailors who were medically evacuated by helicopter after the destroyer collided with the cargo ship.

The military newspaper reports Benson was released from the hospital on June 19 along with two other sailors, according to the 7th Fleet Facebook Post.

The Navy tweeted the USS Fitzgerald has moved into a dry dock at Fleet Activities Yokosuka to continue repairs and assess the damage.
