FOND DU LAC COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - A convicted sex offender will not be placed in Fond du Lac County despite an attempt to temporarily release him in the Town of Eldorado.
If granted supervised release, Jeffrey Butler will be placed in Marinette County where he committed his crime. A Marinette County judge ruled that Wisconsin law prevents an out-of-county placement for Butler.
Butler was convicted in 1995 of sexually assaulting a child.
Gov. Walker recently signed a bill that says violent sex offenders need to be housed in the county where they were convicted of their crimes.
Since 2013, four judges have tried to place an out-of-county offender in Fond du Lac County. The county has successfully prevented those placements.
Sheriff Mick Fink says he is looking into why the area has become "ground zero" for these attempted placements.
