Firefighters respond to a gas leak in Sheboygan

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WBAY) - At 9:51 Wednesday morning the Sheboygan Fire Department was dispatched to the odor of natural gas in the area of the intersection of North 17th Street and St. Clair Avenue in Sheboygan.

A two inch underground gas line had been struck by a construction backhoe at a road construction site. The fire department responded and secured the surrounding area to limit traffic access. While the fire department awaited the arrival of Wisconsin Public Service, they removed any people in the immediate area of the break, secured potential ignition sources and made contact with the occupants of the nearby homes, approximately ten homes were evacuated.

When Wisconsin Public Service arrived at the scene, the fire department worked with them as they shut off the gas supply to the broken pipe. The fire department provided a hose line for protection of the gas company workers as they entered the excavation to crimp the damaged line.

The fire department cleared the scene at 11:53 A.M, with Wisconsin Public Service still on site.
