Consumer Alert: Charity scams and IRS ransomeware alert

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -- With disasters like Harvey, you'll often find charities pop up or you'll get links in emails or social media solicitations collecting donations.

The Better Business Bureau is urging people to research real charities on give.org

The website helps you determine where the money is going and how it will be spent. This tool is helpful anytime and the BBB says they're always working with charities to publish and update their online reports.

The IRS is also warning about fake charity scams in the wake of Harvey.

The IRS and the FBI also put out a warning this week about an official looking email going around.

The IRS says the scam is a new twist on an old scheme as scammers impersonate the IRS and the FBI.

The scam email uses the emblems of both the IRS and the FBI and tries to entice people to click a link to download an FBI questionnaire.

Instead, the link downloads ransomeware, holding your data hostage and asking you to pay money.

Officials say you shouldn't pay the ransom and instead immediately report it to the FBI's internet crime complaint center.
