OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY)- The Oshkosh common council approves a development agreement and development plan Tuesday night which provides millions of dollars to assist major defense contractor, the Oshkosh Corporation in building its new corporate headquarters.
Construction will take place on the site of the Lakeshore Golf Course near Interstate 41 and Lake Butte des Morts.
This is one of the final steps giving the company the green light to break ground.
It was in January that the Oshkosh Corporation released a design concept-- showing the potential look of its new corporate headquarters.
In return for selling 30 acres of property the city is being paid $3.2 million, but must also provide $13.2 million in tax breaks and infrastructure improvements.
That agreement also contains some project specifics.
City Manager Mark Rohloff said,"It's laying it all out, really putting a process in place and timelines in place for all of us to get things done by a certain time. We're going to have responsibilities for getting infrastructure in, Oshkosh Corp will have responsibilities that they will get the building done on time."
It also means much of the focus for the city shifts to future expansion, near the property site.
"The whole Oshkosh Avenue is going to be re-done. I'm proposing that it not only is a two lane, but the median becomes pretty much a boulevard. Let's really make this a first class gateway to the city," said Oshkosh Mayor Steve Cummings.
While the building will have a future capacity for 650 workers, the terms of the deal don't require the company to create a specific number of new jobs.
The city expects the company to break ground sometime in May.
The agreement stipulates construction must be done by the end of 2019.
