Blue Green Algae alert issued for Lake Winnebago

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Winnebago County Health Department has announced a "Blue Green Algae" alert for Lake Winnebago.

The department urges residents to keep children and pets out of the lake in areas where the algae is present.

The health department says the algae, or Cyanobacteria, can produce harmful toxins.

It impacts humans and animals.

Exposure happens through contact with skin (swimming), through inhalation, and by swallowing contaminated water.

Symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea.
