GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Our Target 2 Consumer alert takes gives you a look at cybersecurity careers.
Action 2 News has been following the Equifax data breach that hit potentially 145 million people. It's one of many attacks trying to steal our personal information.
It should have every business realizing that cybersecurity is a huge concern.
Last spring, Tammy Elliott was working on a story with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College when they told her the college was starting a new program this fall focused on cybersecurity.
So, she went back to talk with instructor Joe Cicero about the growth in the cybersecurity field.
"Recently you've seen a plume of companies wanting to hire more it security people because they're seeing the need. Two- three- four years ago it might have been a position they were thinking about but not actively hiring for. The problem is there's not a lot of people out there with these skills so there's not a lot of people out there to hire," said Joe Cicero.
That's one reason NWTC added an "It Security." It's a two-year program to get students ready to go from the classroom into a company. And there is a big push to get students interested in these careers.
A new report from the Better Business Bureau says half of small businesses couldn't stay profitable more than a month if they lost critical information in a cyber attack.
Our Target 2 Consumer Alert on cybersecurity airs on Wednesday at 10 p.m.
