Provided by the Heart of the Valley YMCA, buddy bags are backpacks loaded with fun stuff like comic books and stuffed animals.

Officers can give the bags to kids to comfort them in scary or crisis situations like a house fire, car crash, or domestic abuse situation.

"A lot of times, unfortunately, we encounter youth that may have been taught by parents or people around them to be afraid of police. And so these kinds of things really in a lot of cases break down those barriers," Sgt. David Lund, Appleton Police Department, said.

With Monday's donation, all squad cars in the Fox Valley have a buddy bag. That's more than 1,500 bags.
