American Legion honors WBAY, Brittany Schmidt for fallen heroes reports

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The American Legion has honored WBAY and Action 2 News reporter Brittany Schmidt with certificates of appreciation for honoring fallen heroes in our community.

The awards were presented by members of the Ryan Larson Post 65 in Rome, Wis., to Brittany and General Manager Steve Lavin at the WBAY studio in Green Bay.

In February, Brittany Schmidt did a two-part series about fallen soldiers from the Luxemburg-Casco area, and a World War II veteran who painted their portraits.

The painter, 94-year-old Alex Yawor, paints the portraits, frames them, and sends them to the families of fallen soldiers for free.

In August, Brittany spoke with the family of fallen soldier Nichole Frye of Lena, who is immortalized in one of Yawor's portraits.

The American Legion post in Rome dedicated a flag pole to Frye.
