Phoenix Players will be holding open auditions for their next musical, Once Upon a Mattress (Music by, Mary Rodgers; Book by, Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller & Marshall Barer; Lyrics by, Marshall Barer) on February 12 & 13, 2018 - 6:00pm-8:00pm at Clintonville United Methodist Church, 24 13th St, Clintonville, WI. This will be the troupes' second production in the Clintonville area, and they are looking forward to bringing a new musical to the community. "We had such a great response from the community after our first show, Christmas…On The Air," said the troupes' Creative Director, Brandon Byng, "We were overwhelmed by the support, and we are very excited to get started on our next production."
Once Upon a Mattress is a great community theatre show. It has entertained audiences young and old ever since it open off-Broadway in 1959, starring Carol Burnett in the iconic role of Princess Winnifred. If you thought you knew the story of 'The Princess and The Pea,' you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
"We have so much talent in our area," commented the troupes' Producer, Mary-Beth Kuester, "We hope that old and new faces come to auditions and join the fun of being part of this show!" Ages 13 and older are welcome to audition. Prepare an upbeat song from a musical to sing (not a song from Once Upon a Mattress). Please try to keep your musical selection to two minutes in length, also acapella auditions will not be allowed. You will also learn a short dance routine in small groups at the audition, so please wear comfortable shoes. Rehearsals will generally be on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning in February. Show dates are scheduled for June 1-3 & 8-10, 2018. Please consider your availability for all rehearsals and show dates, and your level of commitment before auditioning. The troupe is also looking for volunteers in multiple areas Backstage, Front of House, Costumers, Choreographers, Set Builders/Painters, Props Masters and so much more. If you are looking to get more involved in your community either as an individual or as a family, community theatre has a place for everyone.
