Event Dates and Times

2/24/2018 - Starts: 11:00 AM
107 N. First Avenue, Sturgeon Bay
The Door County Historical Society will host a winter luncheon and “double feature” presentation about “Barns” on Saturday, February 24. The lunch and programs are a benefit for the Society’s two-year old endowment fund and will be at Stone Harbor Resort; the first program begins at 11:00 am. The program features a showing of the film “The Barn Raisers” and a presentation “An Overview of Barn Preservation in Wisconsin” by Charles (Chuck) Law, one of the programs founders.

The Society’s theme for this year is barns, inspired by the passion of Bernal Chomeau. Over two decades ago when Bernal retired he began to photograph and document Door County barn histories from Washington Island to the east side of Sturgeon Bay. His son Stuart explained, “While he couldn’t save every barn, at least he could record their memory.” His research ended with his passing in 2010, but his legacy lives on as the inspiration for the Door County Historical Society volunteers to continue Bernal’s project. A committee is underway researching and documenting the history of the barns and planning a history day discovering Door County’s barns. Their effort is a tribute to Bernal Chomeau because of his vision in barn preservation. “My Dad would be thrilled to know that his efforts are being continued.”

"The Barn Raisers" is a historical feature film; the documentary tells the story of barns in the Midwest by examining them through the lens of architecture. What do barn settings, styles, methods and materials tell us about the people who built them, the life they lived, and the role these vanishing country cathedrals played in the settling and building of a growing nation? Barns were constructed by farmer-craftsmen, professional builders who traveled from job to job and even architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. "The Barn Raisers" paints a cinematic portrait of barns and builders, and reminds us that these remnants from America's rural past are still here to be appreciated and experienced.
On Saturday, February 24, the doors will open at 10:30 and the first program will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the noon lunch, and then the final program immediately following lunch. Please plan to arrive early for check-in as programs begin promptly. Stone Harbor Resort will serve chicken dumpling soup, green and pasta salads, a deli meat and cheese sandwich buffet, pie, and coffee. The lunch and program fee is $30; keep in mind that your presence supports the Society’s Endowment Fund. To make a reservation, mail your check to the Door County Historical Society Office, P. O. Box 71, Sturgeon Bay 54235 by Monday, February 20. Stone Harbor Resort is located at 107 N. First Avenue, Sturgeon Bay.
